1. SUMHS overall situation of international student education since the epidemic
1) The Value Education of International Students Cultivated in China under “the Belt and Road” Initiative
SUMHS carries out international student education to attract more young people from abroad to receive education in China, provides talent support and intellectual support for the "Belt and Road" strategy, and accumulates extensive contacts for our country in the world pattern, which It is an important way to realize people-to-people bonds.
Education is life. Different from its cultural exchange activities, international student education in China is a long-term and in-depth cross-cultural communication activity. When foreigners come to China to travel and participate in short-term cultural exchanges, it is a fast-food culture, leaving behind a superficial feeling of passing glance, loose structure among personnel, and short-term mutual contact. International students in China receive organized, managed, and systematic higher education. Most of them are young students who have just graduated from foreign high schools when they enter university. Their outlook on life and the world are still in the forming stage, and they are good at learning and accepting new things. After a long period of subtle and silent influence by Chinese culture, they continue to adapt to cultural differences, and can gradually eliminate stereotypes to form a positive evaluation of China's politics, economy, and culture.
Focusing closely on the “Belt and Road” international cooperation initiative, SUMHS always insists on quality first in the education of international students, strictly regulates management, and takes the road of connotative development. In the past seven years, not only has the number of international students increased year by year, but also the cultivation of health ambassadors who know China, have a friendship with China and a community of shared future for mankind has become the top priority of the education of international students in China.
Among the 113 registered foreign undergraduate students of SUMHS, especially in the ravages of the new crown epidemic and in the fight against the epidemic, under the leadership and care of the SUMHS's Epidemic Prevention and Control Leadership Office, the teachers and students of the International Education College have always been cautious and resolutely implemented general requirements for epidemic prevention work. SUMHS's international students earnestly abide by and implement the relevant regulations of assimilation management. They keep their internet connected, and cherish offline learning and internships. The College of International Education is increasingly presenting a positive atmosphere of knowing China, being friends with China, being grateful, and forging ahead.
2) International students feel the warmth of SUMHS online and offline
The epidemic came suddenly and repeatedly, and more than 80% of international students were stranded abroad. Relying on various online platforms at all levels, SUMHS immediately made full use of high-quality online course teaching resources to carry out online education. In combination with various factors such as network conditions, time difference between students’ countries of origin and certification conditions, SUMHS actively carries out online learning activities such as online learning and online teaching, coordinate overall planning, make reasonable arrangements for teaching content and time for international students abroad, and guide teachers to adjust teaching plans and reform teaching methods which promotes the ability of foreign students to improve their independent learning.
SUMHS strictly abides by the Document No.42 and the Document No.50, and refers to the relevant regulations and requirements of SUMHS management measures for transferring internships and returning students to the place of origin. SUMHS immediately formulated the behavior of standardizing the SUMHS 's training and management of international students, providing convenience for international students who cannot return to the SUMHS for internships and practices under the premise of epidemic or force majeure, enhancing educational exchanges and cooperation with foreign countries, and improving the internationalization of SUMHS education, meeting the requirements of SUMHS's internationalization strategy.
The students staying at our campus have received meticulous care from SUMHS. During the campus control period, SUMHS cafeteria regularly provided free ingredients, food, epidemic prevention and anti-epidemic supplies, daily necessities, and nutritional products. The international students of SUMHS felt deeply moved.
During the period of staying abroad, The International Student Management Office of SUMHS took the lead in liaison with the outside of campus, coordinated the relationship between the intern students, their colleges and the internship units, and controlled the quality of the internship. The International Student Management Office and the counselors of the colleges kept in touch and communicated with the students on a regular basis, did a good job in ideological communication and employment guidance for students in a timely manner, and urged students to follow the relevant regulations of the university and the internship unit. The International Education College has established an online learning and psychological service team for international students to provide timely psychological assistance to students, solve learning problems in a timely manner, and cultivate students' healthy and mature psychology and better learning ability. While supporting them to complete overseas studies and internships, it is expected to provide a model for the education of medical international students under the current background of our country.
After active communication, in June 2022, overseas students in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other countries completed graduation internships in their countries. The instructors overcame the time difference and guided the graduation thesis online for international students who successfully passed the defense.
3) Establish the goal of international talent cultivation
Cultivating future talents under the background of globalization and international vision has become the main task of our country's education. The goal of cultivating international students in SUMHS is to study in China, give back to their own country, cultivate more international outstanding youth, and build a community with a shared future for mankind to enhance our country's international influence, appeal, and shaping power, contribute more Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions to human problems, and make new and major contributions to world peace and development.
2. Excellent Case：
1) Overview of international students majoring in clinical medicine in SUMHS
The clinical teaching work of clinical medicine major in SUMHS is mainly undertaken by a group of clinical teaching bases mainly composed of tertiary hospitals which are more than ten standardized training bases for Resident Physicianin internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, general medicine, and first aid. The teaching of clinical medicine has advanced experimental and practical teaching and training conditions, which fully meet the learning of basic medicine and the training of clinical skills. Since the recruitment of international students in 2016, international students in SUMHS can be used as a model for international education both at home and abroad.
SUPPANIDA CHEN (Chen Yijing), a 2018 Thai international student in China, won the second prize of the team in the third clinical medicine professional clinical skills competition and the individual award of medical history collection. She said: "Thanks to SUMHS for Cultivating me. The medal represents the effect of my efforts. I will no longer be afraid to face it. I am full of confidence to learn a lot of knowledge. GAFORZODA SUHAYLII, who is an international student from Tajikistan of the 2018 cohort, and has been studying clinical medicine at SUMHS for 4 years. AKHMEDGALIYEVA DILYARA (An Yanlin) is a 2019 student majoring in clinical medicine, and has not yet returned to school after the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020. She said that she came to Shanghai, China from Kazakhstan two years ago with the dream of becoming a clinician, intending to connect medicine with her future career. But unfortunately, due to the coronavirus at the end of 2019, her college campus life that had just started came to an abrupt end. In the summer of 2021, she was asked to find a hospital for an internship. At that time, she found Orion Medicals, the best hospital in her city, in which she won unanimous praise from local doctors and patients.

2) SUMHS international students majoring in clinical medicine become China-Laos friendship envoys working together to fight the epidemic
SAEPHAN VEODAO (Jiaqi), a Lao student studying in SUMHS, is a 2016 clinical medicine student with excellent academic performance. She was unable to return to campus after the epidemic in early 2020. Graduation is imminent, and the International Education College actively contacted the Lao embassy in China to arrange for the student to come to the local Boqiao Provincial People's Hospital with teaching qualifications to carry out clinical practice. During the internship, the excellent learning achievements of SUMHS student were demonstrated. In May 2020, the situation of epidemic prevention and control in Laos suddenly tightened, and all 18 provinces and cities in Laos were closed for management. The Chinese government's anti-epidemic medical expert team to Laos went to Laos, and its professional fields covered public health, infection control, inspection, respiratory, critical care, nursing, and traditional Chinese medicine. The expert team will introduce and promote China's experience in epidemic prevention and control and the Yunnan plan to the Lao side, and guide the Lao side to further improve related programs such as nucleic acid testing, blood traceability, medical treatment, vaccination, and community management, so as to help the Lao side improve their comprehensive ability to deal with the epidemic. After hearing the news, teachers from SUMHS International Education College encouraged SAEPHAN VEODAO to give full play to her bilingual clinical communication skills in Chinese and Laos, and to use her advantages in clinical medicine to work as a translator for the Chinese government's anti-epidemic medical expert team in Laos. On August 13, 2021, the national leader of Laos inspected the local epidemic prevention and anti-epidemic work. During the internship of SAEPHAN VEODAO, she had the honor to serve as the interpreter of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Benluo Pandanuong, and followed him to the cabin of the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone Hospital and East Hospital, serving as accompanying interpreter, introducing the process of patient diagnosis quality and epidemic prevention measures during the epidemic to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bunro Pandanuong, and at the same time providing consultation for patients in Chinese, Lao, English, etc. The translation service has been well received by the local government and the people.
